Malibu: LA’s rich and sexy northern neighbor

Malibu is where the celebrities live in Southern California. Well, this is where some of the celebrities live. There are a lot of celebrities, and Los Angeles County is pretty big. Malibu has a pretty high saturation of movie stars, though. Non-famous rich people live here, too. The good thing is even a person with a low salary can enjoy the pristine beaches here. As long as you can afford parking, you’re good to relax on some of the best beaches in California.

Downtown Culver City: Yellow Brick Rd. is under construction, so take the 10

Los Angles is a sprawling urban area, but downtown Culver City is one of those rare places in LA where you can walk to multiple places without driving. From the restaurants to the coffeeshops to the movie theater, It’s a veritable pedestrian oasis. Of course, you have to drive to get here, but this is still Los Angeles. And the Sony Pictures studios–formerly MGM Studios–are right next to downtown, so you always remember why this arid desert of Southern California thrives the way it does. If it weren’t for the entertainment industry out here, it would just be the desert without the oasis, pedestrian or not.

Griffith Observatory: cosmic stars above and Hollywood stars below

The Observatory itself is great with its art deco architecture, but the views of the Hollywood sign and all of Los Angeles below is what really makes the Griffith Observatory a “must see attraction” on your visit to LA. And hey, they shot part of James Dean’s “Rebel Without a Cause” here, so there’s that, too.  If you’re on vacation in California, take the drive up into the Hollywood Hills and check this out.  It’s free, so you really don’t have an excuse not to go.

San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge: I left my heart there, and a couple bucks for the toll

The Golden Gate Bridge is easily at the top of the “things to do” list about San Francisco. How can you visit San Francisco on a vacation and not see the Golden Gate Bridge? It’d be crazy. With the views of the city, the Bay, and the Pacific Ocean, plus the bridge itself, traveling to see this man-made wonder is a no brainer.

Hearst Castle: a mansion on California’s central coast

If you travel on the Pacific Coast Highway in California, you’ll reach the central coast of San Simeon.  Once there, you totally have to visit Hearst Castle.  It is a travel destination, mostly because there’s nothing else worth seeing nearby.  Hearst Castle–and it really is a castle–has tons of history.  It was famous back during the Golden Age of Hollywood.  Hearst used to throw lavish parties for A-list celebrities like Charlie Chaplin and Greta Garbo.  With views of the Pacific Ocean and untamed California hills, it’s understandable why movie stars would drive all the way from Los Angeles just for a party.
