Pink’s Hot Dog Stand: it’s worth the heartburn

Watch more Los Angeles videos at tripfilms.com

One place in LA is synonymous with hot dogs: Pink’s.  Since the 1930′s, this place has been serving up their greasy goodness to Angelenos and travelers alike.  It stays open late for those who need a little food after a night on the town, but I would not suggest going then.  The line can go down the block at night.  For a faster wait, go in the afternoon, between lunch and dinner.  They have more options than hot dogs, but why get a burger or Italian beef when this restaurant is known for hot dogs?  If you feel really adventurous, you can order one of their celebrity-named dogs, like the Rosie O’Donnell dog.  Los Angeles is all about the rich and famous, so of course they would name food products after them.  No matter what you get, it will taste pretty good.  Just don’t plan on running a marathon right after eating here.  In fact, plan on having a nap post-Pink’s.

Hollywood & Highland: so much to see!

Watch more Los Angeles videos at tripfilms.com

The intersection of Hollywood & Highland gives you a lot of bang for your tourist buck.  Not in prices–everything here is way overpriced because of all the tourists–but in things to see.  In one city block, you can see the Hollywood sign, Mann’s Chinese Theater, the Kodak Theater where the Oscars are held, and the Hollywood Walk of Fame.  It’s exhausting just listing them.  Don’t expect to see any celebrities walking around, though.  The only celebrities who frequent this area on a non-Oscar night are celebrity impersonators.  But hey, your friends don’t have to know you only saw Jack Sparrow and not Johnny Depp.

LA Farmers Market: nonfarmers welcome

Watch more Los Angeles videos at tripfilms.com

L.A. definitely doesn’t have the first farmers market ever.  It’s not really a new idea to have a central location to peruse fresh produce.  For Los Angeles, though, in a city that is ever changing with new construction, it’s an achievement just to have something remain open since 1934.  This place has everything a tourist would want:  affordable food stands, a variety of souvenirs, and good cuts of meat.  Okay, maybe tourists aren’t too interested in raw pork chops.  But you need something for the locals to buy, right?  I mean, I doubt locals are the ones buying fun stickers and bags of caramel corn.

The Grove Mall: a Siren’s song of decadence

Watch more Los Angeles videos at tripfilms.com

Continuing my travels through this great city I call home, I visit The Grove mall.  Yes, this mall is deserving of a capital “The.”  It’s that kind of mall.  Walking around this outdoor shopping wonderland of Los Angeles, sometimes it doesn’t even feel like a mall.  In fact, most of the time it doesn’t.  It could be the streetcar that travels through it or the jazz standards blasting through speakers, but The Grove isn’t like any other mall I’ve visited.  It has a distinct LA vibe.  Definitely worth a look.  Just be careful on the weekends.  Parking is awful.

Santa Monica Pier: SPOILER, it’s made of wood

Watch more Santa Monica videos at tripfilms.com

Here’s a little ditty about the Santa Monica Pier.  The Pier is definitely a top tourist destination in the Los Angeles area.  If the carnival and amusement park doesn’t make you think so, then the multiple postcard stands and California t-shirt stores will.  What’s the best part of the Santa Monica Pier?  The Pacific Ocean.  Be daring and take the walk down to the beach.  You won’t regret it, even if sand gets in your shoes.
