Downtown Solvang: Denmark in California?!
If you like antiquing, all things Danish, or the indie movie “Sideways,” you’ll love Solvang, a quaint little town on the Central coast of California. It definitely skews older demographically, so don’t go looking for a bustling nightlife scene. They do have a couple of bars–most are strictly wine bars and close early–but the fun of this town really happens during the day. And if you’re there in October, make sure to check out Dogtoberfest.
Dogtoberfest: Pure(bred) Fun
Back in October, I attended Solvang, California’s second annual Dogtoberfest. I’m sure Solvang will have this festival for years to come for at least one reason: dogs are adorable. And dogs dressed in costumes are exponentially adorable. You don’t know what adorable is until you see a hot dog dog dressed as a hot dog.

Hearst Castle: a mansion on California’s central coast
If you travel on the Pacific Coast Highway in California, you’ll reach the central coast of San Simeon. Once there, you totally have to visit Hearst Castle. It is a travel destination, mostly because there’s nothing else worth seeing nearby. Hearst Castle–and it really is a castle–has tons of history. It was famous back during the Golden Age of Hollywood. Hearst used to throw lavish parties for A-list celebrities like Charlie Chaplin and Greta Garbo. With views of the Pacific Ocean and untamed California hills, it’s understandable why movie stars would drive all the way from Los Angeles just for a party.
